*Revival*

I found myself working on the language quite a bit recently (while I was supposed to be editing the book... *scolds self*) and I retract what I said about about how they make sentences. I honestly have very little idea how they speak anymore, but I think I want to go with Adrac's proposal on the first page of this topic.

Basically, there are four parts of the language:
-Grammar / sentence structure
-Vocabulary / diction
-Writing / punctuation
-How they actually physically speak

I've basically been working on the above two. I spent a few hours of wednesday translating the good majority of four hundred words to the East Iga'vi ("Omag", in the book) and Valiero'vi dialects and coming up with a sentence structure (ending up using Yoda-speak).

Here are some examples (V = Valiero; I = Iga):

1. "Hello, my name is [insert name here] and I am a human."
--> Hello, [here insert name] is my name, human am I.
V--> Ey, [lock'a ai'lock halli] o sia halli, tack'borr o si.
I--> Ar, [ryuk'a ai'ryuk zholl] au Sû zholl, tugh'bûr au so.

2. "I love you."
--> Love you, I do. / (I) love you.
V--> Sakki bi si ol. / Sakki bi.
I--> Osaka bo so aul. / Osaka bo.

3. "I hate you. You must die."
--> Hate you, I do. Die, you must. / (I) hate you. You (must) die.
V--> Alki bi si ol. Zaan'ol bi hai. / Alki bi. Bi zaan'ol.
I--> Urûk bo so aul. Zaal'aul bo gha. / Urûk bo. Bo zaal'aul.

4. "The Iga'vi are attcking the city of Valdin!"
--> (The) city (of) Valdin, (the) Iga'vi are attacking!
V--> Irith Valdin Iga'vi o oldan!
I--> Ûrath Valdin Iga'vo au ûrdom!

5. "It is the dawn of the time of the Shadow."
--> (The) dawn (of the) Shadow-time, it is.
V--> Iran'os Shon'elikat syph.
I--> Uran'oz Shon'erighat sith.

I haven't taken into acount that the Xen'vi can't create nasal sounds, so any n's, m's or ng's that pop up anywhere with be a sound that we normally never use in speach. To here this sound, pinch your nostrills shut tighly, open your mouth and try to make a nasal sound. You'll end up sounding like an ostrich, but that's the sound I'm talking about.

I spent a few amusing minutes trying to make a nasal sound while pinching my nostrils. 'Twas epic.

Sounds really cool. Would be awesome to have an English to Omag dictionary.

Lol. Laughing

Thanks. ^^

By the way, the "û" sound is like the "oo" sound (eg. in "book").

Hehe.

I'll post the first round of Valiero'vi words later today, methinks, as well as some language rules that I came up with.

Okay, here's the set of 500 (updated since I first posted this) Valiero'vi words (left = English; right = Xen'vi):

"A" - "Fat":

"Fate" - "Library":

"Lie" - "Send":

"Series" - "Your":

And here are some basic language rules:

Wording (in the Valiero'vi dialect):
1. Make plurals with a "di" at the end of the word.
2. There are four prefixes to change adjectives: "ist" (least), "im" (lesser), "doh" (greater) and "dam" (greatest).
3. There are three prefixes to change verbs or nouns into verbs: "har" (-ing), "hem" (-ed), "het" (-ed to).
4. There are two prefixes to change verbs to nouns: "yiff" (-er) and "yoss" (-ee).
5. Qualifiers are made by adding the suffix "ir" (-ly).
6. Make opposite adjectives with the suffix "ique" (un-, but a suffix).

Grammar:
1. [Verb] [object] [subject] [do/don't] OR [Object] [verb]. (Eg. "Love you, I do" or "Love you".)
2. There are no commas, the words "and" and "or" are always used in a list between each listed item.

Punctuation:
1. Brackets are the only punctuation (example brackets not necessarily how the Xen'vi would write them):
() - Sentence
{} - Question
[] - Exclamation
|| - Parenthesis
•• - Name of person
:: - Name of individual animal/plant/etc.
-- - Name of place
== - Name of time, era or event
<> - Name of deity

Also, I've decided that there will be two majour writing systems: simple and complex. The complex system will be the one written on six or seven lines (either a line for the sounds of each voice orifice or the aforementioned with a seventh line in the middle for the emotion that goes with the words (the shape of the line (eg. straight, dotted, zig-zagging, wavy, etc.) determines the emotion)). The complex system is also normally written from top to bottom or bottom to top.

With the simple system, there is only one line where all the sounds are written. This is both easier to write and longer to write because all the sounds are put in a string. The symbols for sounds that are said at the same time are grouped via connective lines. Sometimes an emotion like is drawn above or below the symbols. It is also common for two lines of writing to be written instead of one, where one line would represent the right voices and the other would represent the left. In this case, an emotion line would be drawn between the two symbol lines. The simple system is normally written from right to left or left to right if there is only one symbol line. If there are two symbol lines, it is written vertically.

In any case, simple or complex, vertical or horizontal, diagonal or even flowing, the orientation of the symbols on the lines show the direction it must be read in, simmilar to how Egyptian hieroglyphics worked.

Cool stuff.

Perhaps some Xen'vi speaking English should have bad grammar and talk all funny, because they're using the grammar rules of their native tongue (Do they have tongues?). Kinda like me when I fail to speak French because I use English grammar rules.

Good point. Xen'vi will speak like Yoda. xD

I realise that there are some really random words in there (like "carpenter"), but that's only because I mainly used Tolkien's Elvish dictionary to get words from (because I'm lazy). At least I took the time to remove words like "apple" and "broadsword", which wouldn't make sence for Xen'vi to have. I only just realised that I forgot to make words for "gun", "explosive" and "machine", though. I think we should make a list of words I should probably still add to the dictionary.

Edit: Said list of randomly jotted down words: (Oh, there's another one.)

Gun
Explosive
Machine
Dart
Arrow
Dartgun
Whip
Vine
Grass
Bed
House
Room
Ceiling
Roof
Bucket
Pot
Jar
Rope
Scroll
Library ("book house", maybe?)
Pillar
School
Learn
Forbidden
Prophecy
Gods
Divine
Green Clouds
Bread
Fruit
Meat
Bone
Fly (verb)
Travel
Border
Nation
Empire
War
Salt
Mud
Inn
Tavern
Market
Slums
Class (of society)
Culture
Religion
Solvoa
Recolliga
Cave
Storey (of a building)
Farm
Hut
Village
Capitol City
Province / State
Tribe
Civilisation
Wilderness
Words
Random (Chaos?)
Order
Memory ("known past", maybe)

Aaaaand... that's about it.

Mhm, we should. I could perhaps do that. I like making lists.

What kind of words would they have?

List hath been made. Come up with more, if you list (though I really don't want to translate the entire English language. I think at most 500 words).

Nice list.

I looked through it and couldn't find "hello" anywhere. lol. That's all I can think of.

I'm sure you could just come up with more words whenever you need them for whatever reason.

Oh, lol, thanks! ^^ I've actually already established the Xen'vi word for "hello" in one of those example sentances, but forgot to add it to the dictionary, I think. Thanks for reminding me!

Oh, and I forgot to ask, does it sound like one language? Do most of the words have a consistent sound to them?

(By the way, have you noticed any special powers recently?)

No problem, lol.

Hmm... I dunno. I'll have to go through the list and check. EDIT: Seems like a proper language to me.

(Special powers? Hmm... Oh snap, seems as if I can delete peoples posts. Didn't notice that before)

Huzzah for good languageness! Instead of making a huge list of words to translate, you could just translate them as you need them.

Oh, and maybe since you have Library as "book house", maybe schools could be "learning house" or something. I dunno.

(Yay! I'll be sure to use my powers wisely! *blows up the forum* JK.)

(EDIT: Can I has dark blue name to feel special-er?)

Yeah, I was thinking that.

Okay, I've updated the dictionary. There are now 500 entries. I'll probably make a thread for it later.
