PostSubject: The Zen'ji Written Language   Wed Nov 30, 2011 4:27 am

Well, there are twelve Zen'ji dialects at present, each with it's own unique sound and writing style. As a result, there are twelve (maybe less) Zen'ji alphabets in use. However, for simplicity's take, each will have an equal amount of letters - 27 - with vaguely corresponding sounds. Because of the Zen'ji's (and my own) obsession with triple symmetry, there will be 9 vowels, 9 voiced consonants and 9 voiceless consonants.

It was quite simple to figure out the vowels. It could group them simply by looking at the Vowel Chart. However, I'm having a bit of trouble with the consonants, as the Consonant Chart isn't nearly as convenient.

Basically, the Zen'ji should be able to make every sound of speech a human can, save for nasals (no nasal cavity). They can still make dental sounds - instead of teeth, they use the bone rim of the insides of the exhalation orifices. Some consonants will probably be grouped into the same letter, but not as much as with the vowels, as consonants are considerably more distinguishable. Some consonant sounds could maybe be left to diagraphs, though (the more uncommon ones).

[Edit:] Here's the Zen'ji set of letters. Please tell me if there's anything you think I should change.

Vowels (IPA symbols. See the Wikipedia article on vowels for more information):
• Close-front (i y ɪ ʏ)
• Close-central (ɨ ʉ ɪ̈ ʊ̈)
• Close-Back (ɯ u ʊ)
• Mid-front (e ø e̞ ø̞ ɛ œ)
• Mid-central (ɘ ɵ ə ɜ ɞ)
• Mid-back (ɤ o ɤ̞ o̞ ʌ ɔ)
• Open-front (æ a ɶ)
• Open-central (ɐ ä)
• Open-back (ɑ ɒ)

Held Consonants:
• Ch (as in loch)
• F
• L
• R
• S
• Sh
• Th (as in thin)
• Front Z
• Zh

Unheld Consonants:
• D
• G
• H
• K
• P
• T
• W
• Y
• Click

Diagraphs (sounds written with two letters):
• B = P.P
• Ch (as in chance) = T.Sh
• J = D.Zh
• Th (as in them) = Th.H
• V = F.F
• Back Z = H.Z
• K-Click = Click.K
• L-Click = Click.L
• T-Click = Click.T

[The following may be outdated]

As for the actual letters, their relative styles are as follows (not the letters or writing systems themselves):
1-Scribble (evolved in Central Xena and was first used by the Aylii'ji)
2-Runic (evolved from 1; its archaic form was first used by the Khell'ji)
3-Tengwar ((Tolkien's elvish writing) evolved from 1; its archaic form was first used by the Vallë'vi)
4-Greek (evolved from 3; developed in the western Aka'ji regions)
5-Latin/Cyrillic (evolved from 4; developed in what is today the Valiero'ji)
6-Islamic (evolved from 3; developed in the Da'mirr Island Arch between Southern Xena and Thera'nal)
7-Eastern (evolved from 2; developed in the central Iga'vi regions)
8-Hindi (evolved from 6 and 7 in what is now the Eastern Jay'ji and Southern Iga'ji regions)

I'll post how the writing systems (five, so far) work later.

Awesome. Complex too. I'll have to check the wiki article later.

I'd write more but I'm stuck with a ton of homework and I can't do anything. Derp. Just stopping by to prove I'm still alive, lol.

Very. In PM's, at least. ^^

We're basically fleshing out the storylines for the second and third books together.

By the way, did he get back to you with the Wiki article thing? PM him if he hasn't.

Cool.

I just PM'd him.

I was going to get more wiki article info, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
*Gets more info anyway*

Yes.

The new chapter setup is making things a bit confusing for me now. I'll probably go and convert all of my wiki notes to the new chapter set up lately. Oh, and I just finished about 2 old chapters worth of addition notes.

Sorry about the trouble... ^^

By the way, most of the *new* info is in Nash'ir's bits. But I advise reading the whole new version again anyway (and while at it, jot down any new info I may have abscent-mindedly added Wink ).

And wtf is this conversation doing on this thread??? Neutral

Stupid meaningless internet meme's... -_-

Anyway, language. I think I found a better way of dividing consonants: Instead of voiced and voiceless, I'll rather use "those-that-can-be-held-on" and "those-that-can't-be-held-on" (no idea what one would call those). In other words:

TTCBHO:
-F
-S
-V
-Front z (the one used in english)
-Back z (to make this sound, position your tongue as though you're about to make a "z", but then move it about an inch / half an inch backwards (you should hear a weird buzzy "h" sound))
-Th (as in Thin)
-Th (as in Them)
-Sh
-Zh (very different from "z"; much closer to "j" and "sh")
-Ch (as in Loch (Scottish loan sound; Not used in English; written "gh" in the dictionary entries))
-J
-L
-R (either type)
-W
-Y (not the vowel version)
-H
(The last three could be omitted entirely, as they just modify the starts and ends vowels. We can use diagraphs of the vowels to write these sounds. In any case, we have to figure out how to condence this into 9 letters.)

TTCn'tBHO:
-D
-G (as in Gun)
-T
-K/c
-B
-P
-Various clicks (according to the IPA, there are 5, but we'll condence that to 3 (maybe less, if we get more of this sound type))

Notes:
-Ch (as in Chance) would now be "t-sh"

Amazing meaningful internet meme.

I do not understand the difference between TTCBHO and TTCn'tBHO.

Well, "hold on" is a direct translation from what you'd say in Afrikaans (my mother tongue) and I have no idea what it would be in English. Basically, the first set can act as vowels in that you can make the sound and then keep the sound going. With the second set, it is impossible to keep the sound going without actually repeating it. (If it helps, you can say "llllllllllll", but you can't say "tttttttttttt" (if you try, it'll be something like "trtrtrtrtrtr" or "tsssssssssss"). Also, with "b" and "p", rassberries don't count 'cause you're actually adding the voiced "r" inbetween the b's or p's.)

Oh, I see. That makes sense.

Yeah, I have no idea what you would call that in English.

So... any consonants I might have left out?

Edit: Excluding nasals (m, n and ng).

A nasal consonant is formed by the flow of air out the mouth is obstructed and forced through the nasal cavity (the chamber the nose leads to). When the lips block the air, the m sound is formed, when the tongue blocks the air up front, the n sound is formed, and when the tongue blocks the air at the back of the mouth cavity, the ng sound is formed.

By the way, "nasal" means "of the nose".
